Little Busters Producer: Anime to Cover Everything, Even Though 26 Episodes Is Not Enough

Little Busters! producer Kohei Kawase revealed in a discussion on the 222nd episode of the Nora Inu Kyōdai no Gyōkai Jiji Hōdan (The Stray Dog Brothers' Current Business Chat) radio show that he is intending to cover the entirety of the original Little Busters! visual novel in the ongoing anime adaptation, even if 26 episodes (two quarters or cours) is not enough.

Kawase said, “Once you get to the 26th episode, you'll understand what I'm talking about. We'll leave the message you've been wishing for at the very end! Don't be doubtful, and don't create a fuss, just please relax and watch. Look forward to what happens! We'll make sure to do the route of that girl you love, I promise! When I say we'll do it all, I don't think 26 episodes will nearly be enough!”

Key, an adult game brand of Visual Art's, released the original romance adventure game for personal computers in 2007, and the game has since been ported to the PlayStation 2 and PSP platforms. The Japanese software company Prototype released the PS Vita version on March 22. The anime began airing in Japan on October 6. - via: Otacom

"Oreimo" S2 to Premiere in April 2013

The future of the Oreimo (Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii wake ga nai!) anime's second season was decided on stage at Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival 2012 today by Ayana Taketatsu (voice of Kirino), Kana Hanazawa (Kuroneko), creator (author Tsukasa Fushimi), as well as staff from both Aniplex (publisher) and Dengeki Bunko (publisher of the light novels).

The meeting's agenda kicked off with discussion of when to air season two. October was immediately rejected since the re-edited "True Route" version of the first season just kicked off its run on Friday. Spring was mentioned as an option since both Taketatsu and Hanazawa like that season, but in the end they decided they needed to know more about the production status before deciding an air date. This entailed the revelation that A-1 Pictures (a subsidiary of Aniplex) will be animating season two instead of AIC Build for scheduling reasons. However, it sounds like the original staff members will be gathered together for the project.

Once they got that announcement out of the way, they arrived at the April 2013 premiere of season two, with the note that taking that amount of time will mean the show will look better.

Next everyone spent some time brain storming character tie-ups. You may remember Kirino's Chiba Mazda campaign, and there was also a successful collaboration that resulted (it was announced) in a new record of 8,400 commemorative ticket sales for Chiba Urban Monorail. The idea of "Kiririn P" (P for Produced) projects was introduced. Taketatsu thought a Kirino-produced clothing line would be cool, and Hanazawa added that Kuroneko could do a collaboration with a goth loli fashion magazine. They're also looking for more ways to stay tight with Chiba.

Atsuko Maeda's Last AKB48 Performance to be Streamed Worldwide

The official Google+ pages for the idol group AKB48 and departing member Atsuko Maeda, as well as AKB48's official YouTube channel, will all stream Maeda's final AKB48 performance worldwide next Monday. The streaming will begin at 6:00 p.m. in Japan (5:00 p.m. UTC+8 Kuala Lumpur).

Maeda's final performance will be in AKB48's Tokyo theater, which opened in the Akihabara district in December of 2005 with 250 seats. However, a record 229,096 people requested tickets — 916.38 times more requests than available seats.

As a result, the performance will be streamed live. Maeda will also ride a vehicle in a farewell procession around the theater so she can greet the general public. The procession will start at 3:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. UTC+8 Kuala Lumpur) next Monday.

Google+ will begin accepting messages (registration required) for Maeda on Tuesday. Namco Bandai Games began streaming the second promotional video and the second television commercial for its Kokoro Connect Yochi Random game for the PlayStation Portable on Thursday. A wraparound jacket band on Sadanatsu Anda's Kokoro Connect: Yume Random light novel revealed in March that a game based on the comedy series was planned. Anda created a scenario for the game. Kokoro Connect Yochi Random will feature five character perspectives called "Pentagon View Scenario" that the player can alternate between, a "D.D.T" (Dynamic Drama Transition) feature, and a point system.

The game is slated for release in Japan on October 18. The "Pentagon Box" edition includes a "visual memory book," an original drama CD, the game's soundtrack, book covers, and an art box. The "Pentagon Box" edition will cost 8,980 yen (about US$113), while the regular edition will be available for 6,280 yen (US$79).

The novel series' television anime adaptation premiered in Japan last month. Sentai Filmworks licensed the "love and teen pentagonal comedy" anime for release in North America, and Crunchyroll is streaming the series in various countries outside Japan as it airs.

“True Route”: Ore no Imouto Anime gets “That” Ending!?

As if the situation surrounding Ore no Imouto’s many “endings” were not complicated enough already, the anime is now to receive a newly reworked 13 episode “true route special edition” run.

The broadcasts hit Japanese network on the 13th of October, with the exact nature of the “true route” unclear (the visual novel edition introduced scores of different endings with varying levels of canonicity, some of which have become quite famous).

However, as the “true route” season 1 is intended to serve as a run-up to the impending second season, it will presumably clear up the confusing mess of endings and episode orders which plagued the original, and allow much further bickering between advocates of Kirino or Kuroneko’s supremacy.

Meanwhile, those who accuse it of being a gussied up rerun with options on a new disc release are surely being overly cynical…

Anonymous Declares War on Japan Over Illegal Downloads

Hacker collective Anonymous has declared open season on the Japanese government for its passage of a draconian ban on illegal downloads and ripping, briefly taking down several government websites in a series of cyber-attacks.

The “Personal Illegal Downloads Punishment Act,” was recently proposed by the opposition LDP and their cultist stooges the Koumeito, and sailed through the Diet with no debate or opposition – 221 for, versus 12 against, with only the fringe left-wing maniacs of the Communists and Social Democrats, and a single Democrat, voting against.

As might be expected, the music industry’s belief that it will miraculously boost its declining sales was the most vocally espoused argument in favour of the law.

The most significant provision of the law is to punish offences of unauthorised downloads of copyrighted commercial audiovisual content with a maximum of 2 years in jail and ¥2,000,000 in fines.

The law also bans all ripping where it involves circumventing a protection system – which, in the best tradition of poorly conceived laws, apparently manages to leave ripping audio CDs legal as there is no protection system involved, whilst banning all format shifting of DVDs and BDs.

The download portion of the law comes into effect in October, whilst the ripping ban is due in January.

Some summary points about the “illegal download” law as it is currently understood:

Downloading copyrighted material was already technically illegal since 2010, but no penalties were attached

The law only applies to commercially (paid-for) distributed copyrighted audiovisual recordings

As a result the law actually leaves games, software, manga and text out – all these are still “legal” to download illegally

There are mixed opinions as to whether “downloading” includes caching or streaming – it has been pointed out that it may well ban YouTube if it does, and the final decision probably rests with police and how much they want to arrest a given person

It is a “shinkokuzai” law – for police to act, there has to be a complaint from a victim

This means police need a specific complaint to act upon – it seems unlikely copyright holders will be able to obtain this kind of information themselves in the case of private downloads, although public downloads are another matter

However, police have shown themselves willing to independently goad copyright holders into pressing charges by providing them with information from unrelated cases

As it potentially criminalises most of the computer-using population of Japan, there is some suspicion that police intend to use their new powers either to bring additional charges against people whose computers they have seized as a matter of course, or to initiate house searches in the hopes of finding additional offences with which to charge victims.

If Japanese police follow their typical pattern of behaviour (as they have done with uploaders), they will likely not crack down hard on all downloaders and infringing sites, but instead make occasional examples of offenders, or use the law to bring extra charges against people arrested for other reasons (handy if the original charges do not stick and thought to be a means of point-scoring for officers and prosecutors) or against sites considered inconvenient.

In response to all this, Anonymous has reared its ugly head, issuing an “official” press release in which it throws down the gauntlet to the Japanese government, who are doubtless quaking in their various Tokyo mansions:

Greetings land of the rising sun, we are Anonymous.

In recent years the content industry, politicians, and governments throughout the world have dramatically increased their efforts to combat internet piracy and copyright infringement. Unfortunately in doing so they have often taken the wrong approach which has lead to draconian laws, infringements of basic rights, and severely stunting the growth of technological innovations.

Japan, home to some of the greatest technological innovations throughout history has now decided to go down the path as well and cave into the pressures of the content industry to combat piracy and copyright infringement. Earlier this week Japan approved an amendment to its copyright law which will give authorities the right to imprison citizens for up to two years simply for downloading copyrighted material

We at Anonymous believe strongly that this will result in scores of unnecessary prison sentences to numerous innocent citizens while doing little to solve the underlying problem of legitimate copyright infringement.

If this situation alone wasn’t horrible enough already, the content industry is now pushing ISPs in Japan to implement surveillance technology that will spy on and every single internet user in Japan. This would be an unprecedented approach and severely reduce the amount of privacy law abiding citizens should have in a free society.

To the government of Japan and the Recording Industry Association of Japan, you can now expect us the same way we have come to expect you in violating our basic rights to privacy and to an open internet.

    We Are Anonymous
    We Are Legion
    We Do Not Forgive
    We Do Not Forget
    Expect Us

They have apparently wasted no time in making their presence felt – the websites of the Supreme Court of Japan, the Democratic Party of Japan and the Cabinet Office have all reportedly suffered DDoS attacks.

Miku Fan Outrage: “Sega Are Trying To Rape Miku!”

Hatsune Miku fans have been outraged by the news Sega is plotting to sully their beloved virtual diva by using her on their pachinko slot machines.

From an exchange reported at the recent Sega Sammy general meeting of stockholders:

“Are you thinking of making a pachislot machine with Hatsune Miku?”

“We’d really love to do a Hatsune Miku pachislot machine. We could expect lots of her fans if we did.

But the rights-holders are a very conservative company, they say they want to take care of her, and give them a break from using her in pachinko for now.

We think if we give them some more time and coaxing, in the near future they’ll let us use her in pachinko and pachislot machines.”

For those not familiar with the details of Sega’s corporate structure, Sega was fully acquired by Sammy, a Japanese maker of pachinko machines, in 2004 after a long-period of post-Dreamcast losses, and Sammy installed its own CEO in the company and vowed only to focus on cashcows (by which it did not mean video game production) from there on.

Sega has since started generating fat profits, although its lack of interest in traditional gaming soon caused its reputation to suffer – not least thanks to its shady pachinko industry parent company.

Pachinko parlours, though ubiquitous in Japan, are only quasi-legal and are almost universally regarded as a pastime only slightly less loathsome than attending AKB48 handshaking events or collecting dolls.

Despite the vocal contempt for pachinko voiced by otaku online, curiously the pachinko industry has persistently licensed high-profile anime characters for its pachislot machines – Evangelion being the most notable example – as well as spun off a large number of its characters into their own anime series.

However, the prospect of Miku being sullied by contact with this base industry, and by no less than Sega, has outraged her fans:

“She’s being made into Sega’s plaything…”

“They are just desperate to consume and destroy her.”

“Her popularity should start to wane soon, then they’ll get their chance.”

“Be honest, Sega. You just want to suck her sweet fluids dry!”

“There’s no way they’ll let her be used for gambling.”

“Pachislot machine Miku – the lowest of the low…”

“Do they really think new customers would come because of her?”

“I get the impression pachinko and Vocaloids are the same demographic though…”

“Get lost, Sega! She’s not your character, quit trying to screw her!”

“This is more Sammy than Sega, I think.”

“Sega is a pachinko company now though. It’s to be expected.”

“I’ll never forgive Sega if they do this. They’ll destroy Hatsune Miku culture!”

“We need to get Nintendo to take care of her.”

“And get a Kinect dance game for her too.”

“All these guys want is to exploit other people’s characters for their filthy pachi-profits.”

“Great, do it! This’ll be the end of Miku!”

“If all this is true then words cannot express my loathing for Sega right now. I’ll not buy another one of their Miku games.”

“Crypton seem to be quite strict with Miku though. Pachinko might mean profits in the short-term, but in the long term her image
might suffer. And the association with gambling is the worst possible one.”

“I just brushed off Sega’s idiocy as it just being Sega after all, but this…”

“Sega think they are the ones behind her popularity.”

“Crypton have Sega over a barrel though, they can pull the rights to Miku from Sega completely if they rub them up the wrong way.”

“Anime and pachislot are contents graveyards. Although occasionally one rises as a zombie.”

“Try this with Sonic or Yakuza instead, Sony! Use your own IP!”

“They already did…”

“They even did Sakura Taisen…”

“Sega: ‘We want to rape Miku to her core, but her parents won’t let us, it’s quite troubling!’”

“Sega: ‘You could make heaps selling your body… we don’t get why you’d refuse?’”

“They are probably desperate to do this after seeing how much Aimasu otaku shelled out on Mobamasu.”

“I choose to believe Crypton will never allow this!”

“Just how far have Sega fallen…”

Little Busters! TV Anime to be Animated by J. C. Staff

The news that the long-awaited adaptation of Key eroge Little Busters! is to be handled by J.C. Staff rather than the much hoped for Kyoto Animation has prompted tremendous outpourings of sweet otaku tears in Japan and beyond.

Non-fans of the original can probably be forgiven for not caring at all, but for overexcited Key fans hoping the title would be a blockbuster on par with Clannad the news has been devastating – though whether this is the result of the perceived weakness of J.C. Staff or the extreme strength of Kyoto Animation is still the subject of much anguished debate.

TV Tokyo Announces Train Hero Series, Plus Movie

It's been a while since we've had any train-related stories in anime or manga - not since Miracle Train, the anime where different train lines were represented as bishounen characters. That is set to change with the latest CGI anime Train Hero, from TV Tokyo in association with Carloon Animation and Total Production Office.

Bleeding Cool reports that the anime is about a Thunderbirds-style rescue team that saves high-speed trains from various disasters. Naturally, as all technology is prone to do in Japan, their trains will transform in order to save the day.

Pat Lee (formerly of Dreamwave) is designing the characters for the 26-episode series, which will also be made into a film timed to coincide with the 2012 debut of China's new high-speed train between Beijing and Shanghai. The TV series will air much sooner on April 26, later being offered to China and other parts of Asia.

Train Hero sounds utterly silly, but maybe they can get some good ridiculous action scenes into some episodes. Here's hoping for multi-track drifting!

Little Busters! Visual Novel Gets TV Anime

Long-suffering Little Busters! fans are rejoicing with the news that the game is apparently finally due its long-awaited TV anime adaptation.

The announcement itself comes from an advert in a Dengeki web radio broadcast, and so whilst having good provenance has very little in the way of details; further information is expected in April.

Little Busters!, aside from being a very popular eroge/visual novel, has long been notorious simply due to the fact it has not yet been turned into an anime (the first game dates from 2007), something which has long aggrieved its fans.

Fans themselves appear to be delighted, with some predicting Clannad-level success should the adaptation fall into the hands of Kyoto Animation again.

Hatsune Miku Concert: 39's Giving Day - Is This Her Last Gig?

Hatsune Miku has a following that would make most Japanese pop stars green with envy, with thousands of fans at every concert and a big international following.

She never misses a beat, fluffs a line or messes up a step. But then she doesn't really exist.

Hatsune Miku is computer generated, based on a voice-synthesizing programme developed by the company Crypton Future Media that allows users to create their own music.

Her image was produced by the company, but her music is a creation of her fans, Her best songs -- the ones headlined at her concerts -- have emerged from more than 20 different people.

The fans know what the fans like.

All 10,000 tickets for the digital diva's four shows in Tokyo -- two on Thursday and two on Friday -- sold out in hours despite the 6,300 yen ($76) ticket price.

Hatsune Miku was projected onto the stage at the shows while thousands of other fans packed into 24 cinemas to watch live.

"It was absolutely amazing, it's like my heart is still dancing. I don't think I'll be able to sleep," 21-year-old Yuya Ofuji said as she came out of a concert.

Another fan, Hazuki Koide, showed her dedication by dressing up as Hatsune Miku.

"I've liked her for a long time and wasn't able to come to the concert last year and watched it in a movie theatre. But this year I thought that I absolutely had to make it," Koide said.

The concert, billed as possibly Hatsune Miku's last, was also broadcast in cinemas in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Some fans came from further afield to catch what could be their idol's last gig.

"We thought we really had to make a real effort to come because we wouldn't get a chance to see her in the future," said Daniel Noll who flew in from Australia.

It's not clear why organizers said these shows could be Hatsune Miku's last, but if they are, she'll be going out on a high. Some online polls have her down as the most-requested singer for the London Olympics opening ceremony.

Whatever her future, the virtual star has made a real difference to many fans, they say.

"She gave a lot of people that didn't have a voice, a voice to express their feelings and thoughts," Noll said.

Toaru Majutsu no Index Novelist to Launch New Series

The light novel author Kazuma Kamachi (Toaru Majutsu no Index, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun) will launch the Waltraute-san no Konkatsu Jijō (Waltraute's Marriage Hunting Situation) series in the March issue of ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko Magazine on Friday.

The story will center on an ordinary boy and the valkyrie Waltraute, a young female warrior with superhuman powers, as their unusual relationship develops.

The artist Nagi (Feng Shui Academy) is illustrating the romantic comedy novel with Kamachi's story. Kamachi and Nagi are also collaborating on the Heavy Object light novel series that debuted in October 2009, and the fifth volume shipped in November.

Kamachi's original Toaru Majutsu no Index light novel series inspired two television anime series, as well as A Certain Scientific Railgun manga that inspired its own anime franchise. A Toaru Majutsu no Index film adaptation was green-lit in October. The third volume of the Shinyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index sequel novel series topped Oricon's bunko (trade paperback book) sales chart during the December 5-11 week.

Hatsune Miku Videos on YouTube Removed

SAVE MIKU:

Video source: YouTube.

Hatsune Miku fans everywhere are being rallied to the virtual diva’s defence – parties unknown have been waging an underhanded campaign against her on YouTube, by filing fraudulent copyright claims against her videos in an effort to get all her songs deleted.

The campaign of mass deletions has been orchestrated against Hatsune Miku and Vocaloid songs hosted on YouTube’s various international sites, targeting translated versions.

Popular Vocaloid videos which were many years old and had accumulated millions of views have been deleted as a result of the action.

The deletions have been requested by a variety of suspicious parties nobody has ever heard of – names featured include “Media Interactive Inc” (who were apparently implicated in the deletion of Lady Gaga’s YouTube account) and variations on the name of “Junichi Sasa” (笹純一, 笹金純一, 笹川純一, 笹村純一, etc.).

As the copyright for all original Hatsune Miku songs normally rests with the original creator, not with any company affiliated with Yamaha, Crypton or the record company mafia (except the minority of songs professionally published by these companies themselves), none of these deletions can be considered as anything but fraudulent.

Japanese Miku fans have already organised a counter-effort in the hopes of uncovering who is behind the deletions, including an English language missive:

"Someone who doesn’t like Hatsune Miku getting popular in the world is deleting her high ranked videos with English titles on it by making fake reports that the videos are infringing a copyright.
We don’t know who is doing this.
The series of these acts may be caused by organized group(s).
It is under investigation by Miku fan volunteers.
If your video is deleted by a fake report, please submit a counter-notification here: http://p.tl/hZW6
To all Vocaloid fans, Let’s get her back. Don’t give up."

All this is possible because YouTube allows unverified third parties to issue takedown notices on any content they host, which usually results in a swift deletion of the video which can only be reversed by a counter-notification.

For takedowns based on the DMCA, providers actually have a legal obligation to restore content if the uploader files a counter-notification objecting to the takedown (for example, by pointing out that the notifier does not actually hold the copyright or have the authority to act on behalf of the owner), at which point the notifier must file a lawsuit in the US or drop the matter and leave the content alone.

Not only is filing a lawsuit expensive, in the case of fraudulent or dubious claims the notifier will have perjured themselves by lying to the court about owning the copyright, possibly a rather more serious matter than the supposed infringement itself.

Unfortunately, not only are most people unaware of this aspect of DMCA usage and easily intimidated by legalistically phrased intimidation, reliably ensuring the original uploader goes to the trouble of filing a counter-notification every time one of their works are subjected to a predatory takedown is a difficult matter, particularly with older content.

Takedowns in other countries may be subject to wildly differing legal requirements, complicating matters even further.

The suspicion online is that the takedowns are politically motivated – there has been some recent high-profile competition between Korean pop groups (the “popularity” of whom is suspected to be the result of organised promotion by Korean nationalists) and Hatsune Miku (who has the earnest support of anime-fans everywhere).

This rivalry recently crystallised in the form of a pointless ranking of groups “which should perform at the London Olympics” (in fact the ranking had no official status whatsoever, a fact which was apparently almost totally lost on both raving Korean and Japanese nationalists and fervent Miku fans).

Thanks to the competing efforts of 4chan, 2ch, and the Koreans, the ranking ended up being topped by Miku, followed by a variety of obscure Korean starlets, a point of pride for deluded right-wing Japanese and probably quite vexing to Korean nationalists who fancy their nation a pop super-power.

Although 2ch is notorious for xenophobically blaming Koreans for every ill it can think of, in this case it is hard to see why else anyone would bother trying to damage Miku’s popularity, as the fraud does not seem to be intended as a shakedown and the “posing as Japanese to do something bad” tactic has apparently often been employed in such Japan-Korea nationalist spats:

“It’s probably some dirty Korean.”

“Nobody but some Korean scumbag would bother to do something this retarded.”

“This will be something to do with that London Olympics stuff…”

“Right – #1 was Miku, the rest were all K-POP.”

“Abusing copyright is a typical Korean ploy. All they can do is copy things and claim them as their own.”

“This is probably more theatrics orchestrated by the net-uyo!”

“Somebody was doing the same thing to AKB videos…”

“They are really going to turn the world against them when this comes out!”

“More of those peninsulars squandering their taxes on promoting K-POOP!”

“It could be a 2ch board – some of them are packed with Miku-haters.”

“YouTube should at least publicise the IP of people who request scores of deletions.”

“Just report all the K-POOP on there using the same name.”

“But all the Koreans loeve Miku just like we do! Believe in them, please.”

“Try searching for ‘VANK’ – you’ll see.”

“This stuff is the shame of Japan, thank god it is being deleted!”

“This is obviously their way of getting back against Miku after she beat all their stupid K-POP groups on that Olympic ranking.”

“As usual, one of their ‘fake Japanese’ tricks.”

“Ahhh – they deleted Crucify by Megurine Luka as well!”

“If they get reported 3 times the user loses their whole account and all their uploads get deleted… this is dreadful.”

“I think this is just haters.”

“The only ones who benefit from all this are Koreans. If you don’t say this, North Americans will never get what is behind all this. They’ll just think it is Miku-ota vs some annoying copyright body. They won’t care.”

“As there is no actual proof of this, constantly saying it will only call your position into doubt.”

“This is a mistake. The videos are being deleted, and they are uploading copies with their own rip-off Vocaloid and pretending they were Korean to start with. They are scrupulously disguising their nationality by using other languages. Tell people what is going on and let them make up their own minds as to who is behind this.”

“You shouldn’t keep mentioning that country. You have to ignore them and avoid making this into another big issue.”

“Somebody tell the guys at 4chan about what those Korean bastards are up to! Can’t anyone here write English properly!?”

“Forget 4chan – don’t expect anything from them, they prefer just to watch.”

“Leave them out of this! You don’t know what they’ll do!”

“4chan never helped with that ranking – that’s just lies. They have no interest in Vocaloids over there.”

“Don’t involve them – it’s a big mistake to think they like the Japanese. And involving them is just like the tactics a certain country uses. If they decide to help, fine, but don’t try and drag them in.”

“Try using Facebook, forums and YouTube to raise awareness of this instead.”

“Don’t forget to complain to Google and YouTube about their system being abused like this.”

“Are you people morons? 4chan came in and ruined their efforts to stack that ranking with Koreans. This issue will not be resolved by avoiding any mention of who is responsible.”

“They know how Koreans do things, and came in and helped with the ranking. Trying to avoid any mention of ‘that country’ will only make it look like a copyright issue."

The online shop of the Japanese broadcaster TBS is celebrating the birthday of K-ON! manga/anime bassist character Akiyama Mio on Sunday with exclusive birthday cards (just like on the birthdays for her band mates). In honor of Mio's January 15 birthday, the store will offer 1,150 cards while supplies last.

On Sunday, the first 650 people who spend at least 5,000 yen (about US$65) at the "ishop" will receive the exclusive birthday cards. Another random 500 online shoppers will be selected to receive the remaining cards.

Fans have already started to celebrate her birthday at home with cakes and figures:
